Aussie sailing cousins foil Olympic champs

AUSTRALIAN duo Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin have taken a small measure of revenge against the team that beat them for gold at the Rio Olympics with their emphatic win in the first major Olympic class regatta of the year.

Argentina's Santigao Lange wrote one of the great stories of the Rio Olympics when the 54-year-old combined with Cecilia Carranza to win gold in the Nacra 17 class just months after the skipper had part of his cancerous left lung removed.

Waterhouse and Darmanin finished behind the inspirational sailor and his crew for a silver medal in their first Olympic appearance.

On Sunday the pair reversed the result to claim an emphatic victory in the Miami World Cup series in the US in the Nacra 17 class which now boast lifting foils to make it faster and more spectacular to watch.

The Sydney cousins won the regatta - and the finale medal race _ by a whopping 28 points to kick their 2018 campaign off on a high note.

"Really stoked with the win and had great fun doing it,'' Darmanin said on Sunday.

Rio Olympic teammate Tom Burton, who won gold at his first Games in 2016, won the Laser regatta racing in Miami.

"It's been a while since I've sailed well in Miami, so it's great to be consistent this week and sail well," Burton said.

Fellow Australian Laser sailor Matt Wearn finished fifth. Former world youth champions Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot finished 12th in the 49erFX class.
