Jail for man who poured boiling water on son

A SUNSHINE COAST father who poured boiling water on his son will spend six months behind bars.

The Maroochydore District Court has heard the man tipped water from a just-boiled kettle on the nine-year-old boy after the child scalded his younger brother with boiling water in a science experiment at the family's restaurant.

The father left his older son at the restaurant to tend to his own injuries while he followed his wife to hospital to check on the condition of the younger boy.

Unable to relieve the pain himself, the older boy sought help at an adjacent business and was taken to the same hospital as his brother.

The court heard the father initially told his wife and police that the older boy had been scalded by accident.

The 55-year-old man pleaded guilty yesterday to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with an offensive weapon.

He was sentenced to three years jail, suspended for three-and-a-half years after he has served six months.

He cannot be named under laws which prevent the identification of child victims of crime.
