'It's s***': Oakey residents vent over New Acland

WHEN James Moxon was asked what he thought of the Land Court's decision to reject the New Acland mine expansion, he was blunt in his assessment.

"I think it's s***," he said, with no humour.

Mr Moxon, a regular to Oakey with dozens of friends who work at the coal mine, was among the many residents venting their frustration at the announcement on Tuesday in Brisbane.

"I've got mates who work there and it's going to affect them," he said. "They've got six years left and after those six years, what are they supposed to do?

"They've got families, houses, mortgages.

"They're guaranteed six years now, but after that, what happens?"

New Hope has warned that the current mine only has enough coal supplies until the end of the year.

Mr Moxon, who works outside of Oakey but travels in to get supplies, said he also felt for local businesses if the mine was to close.

"They'd (small businesses) have to benefit - if there's people working there, they have to come through and buy things," he said.
