Friday the 13th ... unlucky for some?

It's Friday the 13th - and there's good reason to be worried

BLACK Friday has always made people a little jumpy.

Now there's even more reason to be wary today - or any Friday for that matter.

New research has shown car crashes were 10% more likely to occur on Fridays.

RACQ executive manager of insurance communications Mike Sopinski said motorists should take extra care when driving at the end of the week.

"A major cause of car crashes is driver inattention," he said.

"Drivers must use good judgment and not drive if their mind is distracted with work or other issues."

Adding to the risk and mystique of this particular Friday the 13th, heavy fog was expected to cloak the Coast this morning.

Sociology lecturer at the Sunshine Coast University Phillip Ablett said there were two fears that underpinned the superstition about Black Friday.

"If you look at a calendar there are lots of examples that Fridays are unlucky," he said.

"Jesus was crucified on a Friday, the great flood occurred on a Friday, Adam and Eve ate the apple on a Friday, and so on."

The other fear was of the number 13.

"For example there were 12 disciples and Jesus was the 13th," Mr Ablett said.

Modern superstitions surrounding the date first emerged in the 1800s.

Today there is a long list of things not to do on Friday the 13th, including not going to a graveyard or not getting out of bed with your left foot first.

As for the RACQ report, Mr Ablett said there was a perfectly good explanation for the Friday crash stats.

"As a sociologist we look at patterns of people's behaviour," Mr Ablett said.

"And to me, there's a totally natural cause without having to evoke the supernatural for an explanation," he said.

"People are no longer in their ordered routine and are focusing on getting home after work."
