MARTIN Kennedy is the latest in a long line of former Ipswich players to join the Brisbane Broncos.

The 24-year-old prop, currently with the Roosters, will add clout to a Brisbane side that has underperformed this year.

Kennedy, who attended Ipswich Grammar School, has signed a three-year deal and Ipswich Jets chairman Steve Johnson has hailed the move.

"Part of the commitment the Broncos made to us was to take our players into their pathway and to bring back Ipswich players who had been signed by southern clubs when that fitted into their needs," he said.

"Martin moved to Ipswich when he was about 12 and was coached by Brad Wolens at Norths. He was brought into our colts side as a 17-year-old by Trevor Gillmeister when he was our coach.

"That was a stroke of genius that made him undeniably a Queenslander (for Origin qualification) even though he was born in Lismore.

"He made such an impact in our system that he was spirited away down to the Roosters where he has been an enormous success." Johnson said that success extended off the field as much as on it.

"He is very mature and level headed and was able to succeed in the Sydney environment when a lot of kids can't," he said.

"He was at stage at the Roosters where he was identified as a potential captain of that club. I have some connections with the Roosters and they hold Martin in the highest esteem.

"When the club had difficulties last year he fronted up to the members and answered questions about where the club was heading and expressed his confidence in it.

"That has been verified by what they have done this year."

Ipswich and its environs have produced many Broncos greats going back to Allan Langer and the Walters brothers; Kevin and Kerrod. Peter Ryan was also a Laidley junior.
