iPad artists capture PGA golf action

AN iPad and Apple Pencil are probably not the tools most people would reach for when wanting to capture the action of a major sporting event.

But the PGA Tour is known for breaking the mould when it comes to the use of technology.

The Players Championship commissioned iPhone-only photography last year.

This year, artists using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil have been capturing some of the iconic sporting event's magic moments.

Australia has been well represented at the tournament, with Jason Day defending his 2016 title, alongside former world No.1 Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley and young gun Cameron Smith.

TechCrunch spoke with two of the Apple Pencil artists about the initiative.

Jim Conway, a middle school art teacher, explained that the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil changed his entire artistic life.

Before using the device, he didn't have time to paint because of the time it would take him to set up and get supplies.

Now he uses Procreate, a superb painting app available on a tablet.

In March, Apple unveiled its latest iPad which replaces the iPad Air 2 and sits below the two iPad Pro models.

Notably for the first time, the basic 9.7-inch iPad is cheaper than the smaller newest model iPad Mini. The starting price for the new iPad is $469, while the starting price for the iPad Mini 4 is $579.

The new iPad is powered by an A9 chip, and it replaces the iPad Air 2 which was powered by an A8X chip. The two high-end iPad Pro models use a A9X chip that is a step up again.

There are rumours of a 10.5-inch iPad and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is due for an upgrade.
