Industry marks flying milestone

COAL seam gas companies Arrow Energy, Origin, QGC and Santos have marked six months of providing industry funded aero medical evacuation services across the Surat and Bowen Basins.

The Surat Basin Gas Industry Aero Medical Evacuation retrieval service is a partnership between Careflight Queensland and the coal seam gas companies.

It has already conducted nine successful retrieval missions, including seven for members of the community and two for gas workers.

Surat Basin Gas Industry Working Group chairman Tim Coltzau said the service was established to minimise the impacts of the industry.

"We have workers located in remote areas which are often hard to reach in the event of a medical emergency and we didn't want to draw on the communities medical services," Tim said.

"The solution was to come together as an industry and launch the Surat Basin Gas Industry AME retrieval service.

"After a rigorous tender process, CareFlight Group Queensland was chosen as the service providers due to their experience, reputation, safety record and proven dedication to the community."

As part of the service, up to 100 hours of dedicated community use per year is funded by the industry.

The Surat Basin Gas Industry AME retrieval service is based in Roma with a back-up service located in Toowoomba.

The service has a critical care doctor and a paramedic along with a pilot and co-pilot stationed in Roma 365 days a year with a 30 minute launch time in daylight and 60 minute launch time at night.

The helicopters have the capability to accommodate up-to two patients at-a-time.
