Indian activist pleas with PM to stop Carmichael coal mine

AN INDIAN environmental activist has appealed to Prime Minister Tony Abbott to reverse his government's approval of the massive Adani Carmichael coal mine.

The central Queensland mine proposal would be one of the biggest in the country, and was approved by Environment Minister Greg Hunt in July.

But activist Debi Goenka, who is the executive trustee of the Indian group Conservation Action Trust, began legal proceedings against the project earlier this month.

It is understood this is the first instance of an international party objecting to a coal mine in Australia.

The group argues the coal exported will not lift the poorest Indians out of poverty, despite such claims by the industry and Mr Hunt.

Mr Goenka went to Canberra on Wednesday, after asking Mr Abbott and Mr Hunt for meetings to discuss the project.

He said his approach was rejected and he was going to parliament to deliver a "declaration" to the government.

"The cruel reality is that Australian coal from Carmichael will not bring us light or power," he said.

"Many are not connected to the electricity grid - those who are simply cannot afford electricity from Australian coal."

Mr Hunt's office has not responded to questions.
