‘Hunt down’ scare keeps attempted rape victim, 9, quiet

"I WILL hunt you down and kill you."

It was these words that silenced a nine-year-old victim of attempted rape for more than a year.

A man who was a family friend and at times a trusted babysitter forced himself on the young girl twice at her Rockhampton home in February, 2012.

Fearful for her safety, the girl kept this horrible secret to herself, eventually confiding in a school teacher.

Police were then notified and the man was charged.

The 55-year-old pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court yesterday to two counts of attempted rape, as well as six counts of indecent treatment relating to two complainants.

Crown prosecutor Russell Hood told the court the man was asked to help move some furniture to an area underneath the girl's family home.

When he was alone with the girl he held her down on a mattress and attempted to rape her on two separate occasions.

Thankfully, she was able to fight him off both times.

The court heard the man also inappropriately touched a neighbour's daughter at his unit between 2007 and 2009.

She was between 10 and 11 at the time.

Defence barrister Tom Polley said the man had a severe lack of education and a troubled upbringing.

He said his client didn't think he was hurting the girls at the time, but has since realised the devastating effects of his conduct.

However, Mr Hood said this did not explain or excuse his predatory sexual behaviour.

He said the man's hopes for rehabilitation were poor.

Judge Paul Smith encouraged the man to engage in some counselling programs while in prison.

He sentenced the man to seven years jail.

He will be eligible for parole on January 17, 2016.
