The Hobbit smashes LOTR box office records in the US

THE Hobbit has led the US box office in a record breaking opening weekend which surpassed the debuts of any of the three previous The Lord of the Rings films.

The Peter Jackson epic was the biggest December opening for the US ever, earning $NZ100.3 million in its first two days.

It surpassed Will Smith's I Am Legend, which opened with $91.2 million in 2007, according to studio estimates.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also passed the December opening of Avatar, which opened with $91 million.

It was a bigger draw than the last of the Lord of the Rings films, The Return of the King, which opened with $85.4 million.
