High-profile athlete in car crash

A MOTORIST, believed to be a high profile Gold Coast athlete, has been critically injured in a crash at Mermaid Waters this morning.

A car reportedly crashed into a fence near the Allandale Entrance of the Q Super Centre carpark off Markeri Street just after 7am.

The driver, who is understood to be a well-known sportsman, suffered a medical condition at the wheel.

News Corp has chosen not to name him until all relatives have been advised.

The driver was worked on by paramedics at the scene for at least hour before being rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital.

He was taken in a critical condition to the Intensive Care Unit.
