Lost walker rescued by helicopter

A MAN has been winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after becoming lost on a Gordonvale walking track during a storm.

The 66-year-old left home about 9am yesterday morning to go fossicking along a track near Auld Cl.

He called family and police just after 4pm to say he was lost as wild weather battered the area.

A police spokeswoman said conditions were initially too poor for the Rescue 510 helicopter to fly, so an SES crew was brought in to search the area on foot.

She said police also used their siren to help determine where the man was by how well he could hear it.

The chopper was able to join the search some time later and located him about 9.30pm before winching him to safety.

He was taken to Cairns Hospital for assessment.
