Heartbreaking view of Cyclone Marcia's devastation on region

WHEN I boarded a small commercial plane in Rockhampton and set off to inspect and photograph the aftermath of Cyclone Marcia from the sky yesterday, I couldn't have prepared myself for what I saw.

Over the past few days I have travelled around Rockhampton, Gracemere, Bouldercombe, Mt Morgan and Kabra checking on how the locals were doing after the storm, but nothing compares to what I witnessed from above.

As we approached the Byfield area, my heart sank as I took in the absolutely flattened once breath-taking Byfield Forest.

It sank even further when the obliterated homes with debris scattered hundreds of metres around came into view as we travelled over Byfield and along the Capricorn Coast to Yeppoon, Emu Park, Keppel Sands, Cawarral and everywhere in between.

Many of us may be suffering from a lack of electricity, water, fuel and phone service, but absolutely nothing can compare to the devastation and heartbreak of the residents who have had their homes and livelihoods literally smashed into a million pieces.

We as an entire region are extremely lucky no one was seriously injured or killed at the hands of Cyclone Marcia.

Be thankful of that. I know I am.
