MORE than 40 people gathered in Robina yesterday to learn the secrets to creating healthy and delicious meals.
Organiser and chef Marg Kyle gave participants a variety of insights and tips as the powerful scent of spices wafted around Robina Library.
Ms Kyle said her classes always focused on teaching people that healthy food need not be boring.
“People are waking up to the fact that Australia has an eating problem,” she said.
“A lot of illnesses could be avoided if people eat properly.
“A generation hasn't learned to cook.”
Ms Kyle, the first female apprentice chef in Queensland and keen surf lifesaver, chose to share the recipe for Moroccan chicken with red quinoa.
“Because the quinoa is a healthy alternative to a carbohydrate,” she said.
“It's got a lot of flavours that people haven't come across.”
Ms Kyle attributed the high level of interest in her class to the popularity of cooking shows on television.
Anne Peters, of Mudgeeraba, said she came along in a bid to improve her cooking skills.
“I do cook healthy meals that are plain, but I thought this could add a little more interest,” she said.
“Sometimes it's not to your taste, but you won't know until you try.
“I thought there might be something here for me that I could do.”
Ms Peters said she took the opportunity to ask Ms Kyle questions about healthy cooking.
