Hard work gives firies upper hand in bushfire battles

HARD work and a change in the weather have put rural firefighters in control of blazes burning at Ravensbourne and Ballandean.

Rural Fire Service Queensland Toowoomba officer Acting Inspector Paul Storrs said a fire south east of Lake Cressbrook was this afternoon contained.

He said two helicopters flew water bombing missions throughout the morning to assist ground crews in containing the blaze, which covered an area nearly 700 hectares in size.

"Crews worked really hard through the day and established containment of the fire," Act. Insp. Storrs said.

"The (weather) conditions have been more favourable today."

Meanwhile, State Emergency Service volunteers were praised for their efforts refilling water bombing planes that worked on a 3500 hectare fire at Ballandean on the Southern Downs.

Act. Insp. Storrs said that fire was also burning within containment lines.

"The crews, they will be strengthening containment lines for a couple of days."

Firefighters were expected to remain on site at both blazes tonight.

Act. Insp. Storrs said while the hot and dry weather conditions had eased slightly, patterns predicted for the next week indicated there would still be a risk of fires.

He asked landholders in the Toowoomba region to put off any burning they had planned for the next 10 days.
