Hamish and Andy new King Mayors of Iron Island in CQ

KING Billy was crowned mayor of Livingstone on January 1, but he could soon be dethroned by two of Australia's most popular identities.

Comedy duo Hamish and Andy have applied to temporarily occupy Iron Island, an islet south-east of Mackay that falls under the realm of Livingstone Shire Council.

If successful, they will take the title of King Mayors.

They have applied to the State Government to rent the 4.5ha island, situated off the tip of Marble Island, with a plan to transform it into "The People's Island".

On learning of their bold plan, Cr Ludwig suggested the duo should consider seceding from Livingstone.

"I would even support ... a secession," he said on their radio program on Thursday. "We could do that because we've got absolutely zero ratepayers and in fact the only people who are going to vote for you on that island are goats."

Cr Ludwig ultimately gave his blessing to the duo in their mayoral quest, saying he was "delighted for you guys to take over that area".

After he signed off, Hamish and Andy said they might even consider head-hunting the current mayor as their deputy.

Cr Ludwig said that all jokes aside, the comedy duo was giving Livingstone incredible exposure.

"From an official point of view, we would certainly welcome them," he said, on the proviso they regularly broadcast from the island.

"Given the tourism and promotional opportunities this could generate, we would be delighted to support the application.''
