Downs winemaker wins Qld's richest wine award

HE'S learnt over the years how to grow the right grapes to make the perfect wines and now Granite Belt winery owner Robert Channon has won Queensland's richest wine award.

The title is awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry.

The Pullman/Queensland Wine Press Club award, worth $1000 and a trophy, was presented to Mr Channon by QWPC president Ian McLeod.

A former litigation lawyer, Mr Channon established Robert Channon Wines in the late '90s after deciding the law wasn't for him and he wanted to make wine.

He bought a cattle property, turned it into a winery and went on to win numerous trophies and gold medals at Australian wine shows.

"It's generally recognised that his verdelho helped put Queensland on the national wine map," Mr McLeod said.

"Wine expert James Halliday has said he is one of the best producers of this variety in the country.

"He has established an enviable record for attention to detail in viticulture and winemaking."
