Reports: Girl taken from Brisbane for genital mutilation

A GIRL taken from her Brisbane home has been forced to endure genital mutilation in Africa.

The Australian Federal Police told APN on Tuesday it was now investigating the allegations following a referral.

A spokeswoman would confirm no other details about the case.

"We have received a referral," she said.

"We are conducting inquiries at the moment."

It follows media reports that the girl travelled to Gambia with her father for the procedure, which is illegal in Australia.

Performing female genital mutilation or taking them somewhere to have the procedure done can earn a jail term ranging from seven to 21 years.
