Gillett still “sorting out” future

ORIGIN man of the match Matt Gillett has refused to rule out leaving the Brisbane Broncos despite reports he will knock back massive money to stay with the six-time premiership winners.

Gillett's powerful defensive performance for Queensland in their 6-4 Origin victory to go 1-0 up in the series on Wednesday night, has put the heat on Brisbane to re-sign him quickly.

The former Bribie Island junior was linked to a reported $800,000-a-season deal with the Dragons earlier this year - money Brisbane can't match.

Cronulla, South Sydney, and the Gold Coast were all reportedly interested in snaring his signature but the mail was he would turn his back on the big money suitors because he enjoyed playing and living in Brisbane.

Asked by Australian Regional Media after the Origin game if he was close to making a decision on his future the 27-year-old said he was "still sorting it out".

"Obviously I want to stay at the Broncos but I'll leave it up to my manager to work out," he said.

"Hopefully we can make an announcement soon but right now my focus is on playing good footy.

"Where I end up, I end up. But at the moment I just want to do the best for whatever jersey I pull on."

He certainly did that for Queensland, pipping fullback Darius Boyd for man-of-the-match honours after coming up with some key defensive plays.

Boyd was magnificent playing his 24th Origin but his first in the No.1 jumper.

Boyd ran 162 metres but more importantly shut down a lot of dangerous out-the-back raids by the Blues.
