Get on your bike to find bush tucker

IT’S ancient Aboriginal culture and bush knowledge, on 21st-century electric bikes, and it’s on now in Agnes Water.

Bush tucker man Marcus Webber is conducting Discover 1770 guided tours on The Discovery Coast, giving visitors a taste of Aboriginal culture and foods.

The tours depart daily from Agnes Beach Bicycles and incorporate Aboriginal culture, a bit of the history of Captain Cook and the wildlife and bush tucker of Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy – and all on electric bikes.

“We adapt the tours depending on the group, sometimes concentrating more on the wildlife and bush tucker and others on the historical and cultural side, both Aboriginal and the arrival of the first white men,” Marcus said.

“I learnt a lot about, and gained a deep respect for the Aboriginal people and their culture while working in the Northern Territory, and it is fun sharing that with visitors to the area.

“The Discovery Coast, and Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy in particular, have significant Aboriginal sites and cultural heritage.”

Marcus has qualifications in horticulture and hospitality and worked as a chef, for many years concentrating on incorporating bush tucker in his menus.

“We used to do similar tours in the NT. People are looking for a different tourism experience today and this gives a bit of understanding to things that people often know nothing about,” he said.

“As part of the tours we used to collect bush tucker and use it in the restaurant.”
