DRESSED in a bright yellow suit, bankrupt businessman Geoffrey Edelsten shocked a field of onlookers at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday when he proposed to clothing designer Gabbi Grecko.
The proposal was one of the celebrity highlights of the big day, where even Spandau Ballet and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop joined the festivities.
Donning their best designer threads, American model Gigi Hadid, Australian television personalities Rebecca Judd and Molly Meldrum were among the celebrities spied at the track.
Bec and Lleyton Hewitt, Mad Men star Rich Sommer and Victorian Premier Denis Napthine also made appearances among the marquees.
However, the festive spirit was cut short after the German runner Protectionist won the Cup and pre-race favourite Admire Rakti collapsed and died in the stalls.
A second runner, Araldo, also broke a leg after the race in an incident in the mounting yards, and was undergoing veterinary treatment late in the afternoon.
