TUCKED away on the Coolum Esplanade between the Coffee Club and a bank is a little gelato parlour that continues to win awards for its range of delectable frozen delights.
In its seven years Gelato Mio has won five gold medals and countless silvers at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show.
This year was no different with Gelato Mio picking up five medals at the event, included a gold for its hazelnut gelato.
Judges were so impressed, it was awarded the maximum possible score and it also won the best flavour award for its category.
But co-owner Claudio Pinto said there was “no big secret” to this gelato’s overwhelming success.
“It’s just fresh milk, fresh cream and fresh fruit. That’s what makes it the way it is,” Mr Pinto said.
Mr Pinto, originally from Rome, has rejoined forces with owner Claudio Giulietti in bringing the flavours of Italy to Coolum.
“Claudio came to see me in Italy because he was opening a shop in Australia.” Mr Pinto said.
“I said when he was ready I’d come with him and help out.
“I stayed 10 to 15 days. But then I heard he was thinking of selling the shop and I said ‘No, let’s rebrand it’.”
Since then, Mr Pinto has been helping create new flavours.
Another big winner at the Food and Wine show was McMartin’s Strawberry farm at Bli Bli which collected three gold, seven silver and two bronze medals.
Owner Lillian McMartin said the strawberry, passionfruit and lychee picked up gold. It was the first time the farm had entered the competition.
