Gatton man guilty of stalking Lockyer Valley Mayor

A GATTON man has been released on parole after being found guilty of stalking Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones.

Ipswich District Court heard Rodney Stanley Welk had a long-running feud with the mayor over drainage issues at the defendant's Laidley property.

Colleagues of Cr Jones reported hearing Welk say at a public meeting that he planned to "top" Cr Jones.

After their deliberations concluded yesterday, the jury found Welk guilty of one count of unlawful stalking and three counts of using a carriage service to menace or harass.

Welk was sentenced to separate terms of six months and 12 months in jail, but was allowed immediate release on parole.

He was also placed on a good behaviour bond.

Welk had previously pleaded guilty to two other charges of using a carriage service to menace.

One count involved a telephone call to council lawyers in which he threatened that anyone who entered his property would leave "in a body bag".

During the trial, the court heard Cr Jones had feared for the safety of his colleagues and family.

Security had been upgraded at the council chambers and security was hired to keep watch on the mayor's house.

Cr Jones said he was content at the outcome of the trial and sentence.

"I would like to make special mention of the court system," he said.

"We have heard lots of negatives recently, but in this case it worked extremely well."
