Old Station Fly in and Heritage fundraiser tops $300,000

It is believed up to 10,000 people attended the amazing Old Station Fly In & Heritage Show held on the weekend, 27-28-29th May this year.

This is an annual fund raiser, held on the late George Albert Creed OAM's property, "The Old Station", which is 8km SW of Raglan.

The show is organised and run by The Old Station Flying Club Inc. in conjunction with the late George Creed's family.

$25,000 was raised for the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service last year at this event. Costs are still coming in, but it is believed well over $25,000 has been raised this year.

It needs to be added this event would not be so successful without a lot of generous help and support from many other organisations, clubs, businesses and people.

The successful show we just witnessed was the Club's 25th event, although they have been holding gatherings and fund raisers for 29 years.

A few years were missed out (didn't happen) because of the world economic crisis, then the late George Creed's short run of bad health.

It's about 30 years since the late George Creed shaped up an old airstrip here on the property, and the family took to the air in various ultralight type aircraft before purchasing a Hughes Lightwing.

It wasn't long before the word got around, and there was always someone flying in just to check out the strip.

Back then it was great to have somewhere to fly and the pilots always knew they would be offered a cuppa and something to eat.

The Rockhampton Aero Club decided to make The Old Station a destination for their competition flying days, with flour bombing, balloon bursting and spot landings.

George Creed formed The Old Station Flying Club with some local pilots joining up, and soon aircraft were arriving from far and wide to join in, and that's how our first official event came to being.

Each year this annual event doubled in size, and there was always an impromptu Air Show.

The late Barry Hemple would fly up something special, then he persuaded Kim Rolph-Smith to bring his T-28 Trojan.

Any money raised was donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

It was a request by a local business man John Baveau, that money raised at the 1995 Fly In & Air Show, be donated to kick start the formation of the now Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.

These annual shows continued to get bigger and our 2007 show was probably our best ever.

We had the full RAAF Roulettes, lots of well-known aerobatic pilots, and Dick Smith kindly flew up "Macca" and he and Lee did their Sunday morning radio program from the airfield.

After that fantastic show, the club decided a show every two years would allow members to enjoy some recreational flying, so our next show was planned for 2009.

We all know what happened that year.

The world economy fell in a heap, there was no money for pleasure, so we stalled again.

Sadly, George was then diagnosed with lung cancer, and we lost him towards the end of 2010.

Over 1,500 people drove into "The Old Station" on that rainy morning to attend his funeral, and to show their respect to a man who had given 34 ½ years to the community through his work as a councillor and mayor of Calliope Shire Council, and as the first mayor of the amalgamated Gladstone Regional Council.

At George's funeral, a lot of people were asking us to run another fund raising event in George's memory.

So as a family, we decided to pull what we could together, change the format to include what George always loved, trucks, tractors, heritage gear, and hold the event on the 4th weekend in May.

Since humble minuscule beginnings, with what we have raised this year, well over $300,000 has been raised for the above mentioned charities.

Because the Old Station Flying Club Inc. (OSFC) is a genuine "not for profit" club, the help and support we get to help raise these funds is overwhelming.

It needs to be added The OSFC has never received any grant money, and all proceeds directed to the charity at our event are passed onto the Rescue Chopper.

Going back over a decade ago, when the OSFC were trying to cater for these events and couldn't cope, some club members approached the Boyne Is. Lions Club and explained our predicament, so they very generously offered to do the catering at our next fund raising event.

At every event since, the Boyne Is. Lions Club consciously help out with the Friday Night Dinner, then cook breakfast and provide good quality hot food for the next two days.

The Lions Club pay for and source all goods they use and after the event use funds raised to pay for these goods.

They then pass on 100% of the remaining funds as a cheque which is presented to the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.
