FREAKY ENCOUNTER: This is why you need to call police...

IT is the Hervey Bay police report that sounds like a scene from a horror movie.

A Kawungan woman was woken from her sleep to the sound of her garage door going up about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Police said the woman closed the roller door of her Mackay Drive home's garage before she went to check her car.

Hervey Bay police Senior Constable Tony Watherston said the woman told police she found the passenger door of her locked Toyota Kluger was open.

It was soon after the woman noticed her garage roller door was again completely open and this time the remote control was missing.

Snr Const Watherston said Wednesday night's eerie encounter with a potential burglar was a reason for residents to report crimes as soon as they happen.

"Reporting these crimes to police straight away increases the chances of police successfully identifying and apprehending the offender while still at the scene or nearby," Snr Const Watherston said.

While it wasn't common that residents left it until the next day to call police, Sgt Watherston said this was a timely reminder for the community for the future.

Police have crews patrolling 24 hours a day throughout the region.

"It is not an inconvenience for us (police) when residents call as soon as they notice something suspicious like this," Sgt Watherston said.

Anyone with information that may assist police investigations is being urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
