Foxtel takes on Netflix with new Foxtel Play service

PAY-TV provider Foxtel is taking on streaming services like Netflix with a new flexible pricing model.

Today at the 2016 ASTRA conference, Foxtel announced a new approach to pricing and packaging for its IP-delivered subscription TV service, Foxtel Play.

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh unveiled a new pricing model that features low cost entry points at prices that will compete with SVOD services.

Set to launch in December, the new Foxtel Play will allow users to view content through their own connected devices, such as a smart TV or laptop.

The move is designed to increase consumer choice and to break down traditional barriers to taking up Foxtel's services.

The new IP offering will have five entry level tiers - two for drama, one for lifestyle, one for documentaries and one for kid - featuring on-demand, catch up and library content plus mobile access via Foxtel Go.

Sport and movie tiers will be available for an additional cost.

As part of its new delivery options, Foxtel also confirmed that it is developing a new low cost 'puck' device to access its IP delivered content.

In addition to it's new IP pricing, Foxtel also announced that it has entered a new agreement with US broadcaster HBO that will give subscribers access to more content from January 1, 2017.
