Flag waver's parents shamed in parliament

THE parents of a flag-waving child who caused Melbourne Cup runner Araldo to spook and break its leg have been shamed in NSW Parliament.

Labor MP Amanda Fazio lashed out after Araldo was forced to be put down due to its injuries.

"I draw the attention of the House to the incidents that occurred at the Melbourne Cup yesterday, and particularly the attacks on the thoroughbred racing industry," she said.

"Why have the people who made those attacks not also questioned the actions of the irresponsible parents who allowed their small child to get very close to a champion racehorse and wave a flag in its face?

"That spooked the horse and caused it to get caught on a metal fence and shatter its back leg.

"Those people should be ashamed of their behaviour. It was appalling."
