Five dead on Queensland roads in just one day
FIVE people, including a 90-year-old woman hit by a ute, have died in four separate traffic incidents across Queensland today.
The first incident happened just before midday in Nagoorin, south of Gladstone, where a car crashed on Monto Rd.
The 62-year-old female driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene.
Around noon a 26-year-old truck driver hauling a trailer full of hay along Yeovil Rd in Taroom, 380km northwest of Brisbane, lost control while turning a bend and crashed.
He was also the only person in the vehicle and declared dead at the scene.
Two men found dead in their green sedan around 2pm on Maidenwell-Bunya Mountains Rd in Wengenville, near Kingaroy, may have also lost control of their car while turning a corner, police said. The 53-year-old driver and his 42-year-old passenger died at the scene after crashing into a tree.
A 90-year-old woman became the fifth victim in just four hours after she was hit by a reversing ute of Goodwin St in the Townsville suburb of Currajong just before 4pm.
Police said she suffered critical injuries after being struck by the rear tray. She was taken to Townsville Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating all four incidents.
The fatalities bring the state's road toll for the year to 168, one fewer than the same time last year.
Earlier, a man died in Townsville following an incident last Thursday where he was hit by a truck. The 45-year-old was on the corner of Hugh and Montgomery streets when the accident happened.
He was taken to Townsville Hospital in a serious, where he died on Sunday afternoon.
Police are also appealing for witnesses to come forward after a serious traffic crash on the Gold Coast on Monday morning that has left a 51-year-old in serious condition with extensive injuries.
Around 7.05am two cars and a ute collided at the intersection of Scottsdale Dr and Stapley Dr in Varsity Lakes.
A 51-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition with chest, face and ankle injuries.
Two men, aged 18 and 17, suffered minor injuries.
