No one inside Maryborough house destroyed by fire

UPDATE: NO ONE was inside a Churchill St house gutted by fire early this morning, police have confirmed.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nikki Colfs said the Criminal Investigation Branch was currently at the scene of the suspicious fire.

"We can confirm that no one was inside the house," she said.

EARLIER: FIREFIGHTERS are unable to confirm whether anyone was inside a Maryborough house when it went up in flames early on Monday morning.

Crews rushed to 32 Churchill St at 2.10am after receiving multiple calls from members of the public.

The property was completely engulfed by the time they arrived and had spread to the next-door neighbour's sleep-out.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in time to stop it spreading any further.

Maryborough station officer Dennis Pamenter said it was believed there was no one inside number 32 at the time, but that was yet to be officially confirmed.

"It's a bit dangerous - the house is leaning to one side - and until we are able to get inside we can't confirm whether anyone was inside."

He said both homes were rentals and a number of young men were renting the house that was destroyed.

The family who lived next door were unharmed.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and as such police are guarding the scene on Monday morning.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Branch will begin investigating.
