Firefighters battle blaze near Pioneer River

FIREFIGHTERS are working to determine the cause of a blaze that drew hundreds of spectators to the banks of the Pioneer River.

A huge plume of thick black smoke poured into the air shortly after 4.15pm.

Visible for kilometres, it had residents fearing Caneland Central or nearby businesses were on fire.

However, the blaze was believed to be a plastic bridge on the Bluewater Trail.

The track was closed while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

No one was injured.
