12.50pm: A MASSIVE fire has shut down one of the Clarence Valley's major sawmills at Junction Hill.
Shortly after 10am a fire broke out in what staff described as an equipment storage section of the Big River Timber on the Trenayr Rd.
Within 15 minutes a pall of thick, black was rising into the air.
All staff were evacuated from the premises as the Grafton and South Grafton fire brigades and Rural Fire Service trucks from around the area began to arrive.
After another 10 minutes flames could be seen burning through a wall of a building in the centre of the complex and occasionally shooting up into the air.
The smoke became thicker and darker as the flames intensified.
Big River Timber managing director Jim Bindon was among the staff watching the firemen battle the fire.
He did not want to comment yet on the fire.
By 11.45am the fire was largely under control and the fire brigade issued a call that no more assistance was required.
Two ambulance vehicles attended, but no-one was injured in the fire.
Police closed off Trenayr Rd on either side of the Big River Timber site while the fire trucks fought the blaze. The road was still closed at noon.
