Fiat launches foray into SUVs with mid-size Freemont

THE mid-size Fiat Freemont has been launched with a drive-away price starting at $27,000, marking the first offering in a product onslaught from the Italian brand.

It's the first of four new additions this year, which will be followed by the Panda and Punto, while an expanded Fiat 500 range will touch down in June.

The new Fiat Freemont is available in three specification levels - Base, Urban and Lounge - powered by either a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder MultiJet II diesel.

While five seats are standard (1461 litres of cargo space), for $1500 a seven-seat configuration is available on any trim level.

Both engines drive the front wheels via either a six-speed automatic transmission (petrol engine) or a six-speed manual (diesel engine) and have been produced and developed by Fiat Powertrain.

The 2.4-litre petrol engine produces 125kW at 6000rpm and 220Nm at 4500rpm while the diesel engine achieves 125kW at 4000rpm and 350Nm at 1750 - 2500rpm.

Fiat is trumpeting its diesel which starts at $32,600.

Standard features across the range include Uconnect phone with Bluetooth audio streaming, keyless entry and start, child-booster seats, rear-parking sensors, USB and AUX inputs, automatic headlights, auto-tint rearview mirror, active front headrests, alarm with anti-intrusion system and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Mid-range Fiat Freemont Urban adds extras including a Uconnect infotainment system with 21cm screen which includes a DVD player, dual-zone automatic temperature control, six-way electronic adjustment for the drivers' seat, a leather-wrapped gear-lever and Sunscreen glass.

The range-topping Fiat Freemont Lounge - at $30,300 - gets all the goodies such as satellite navigation, accent-stitched leather upholstery and premium door trims, chrome roof bars, Alpine audio system with a subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, 19-inch alloy wheels and heated front seats.
