Federer at last adds Davis Cup to his collection
IN THE end it took just one hour and 42 minutes to fill a glaring hole in the greatest career in the game.
Roger Federer handed Switzerland its first Davis Cup victory with a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the first of the reverse singles, taking an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the tie.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion said he was "unbelievably happy" to finally add a Davis Cup victory to his CV, but was quick to praise teammate Stan Wawrinka for his contribution.
Switzerland became just the 14th country to claim the title since the competition began 115 years ago.
It also became the first new nation to win the trophy since Novak Djokovic took Serbia to its maiden success in 2010.
Wawrinka became the first person since Andre Agassi in 1992 to win his maiden Grand Slam title and lift his first Davis Cup trophy in the same year.
