As he runs out against Far North Queensland Heat at Clive Berghofer Stadium today Tom Fanning will edge even closer to his 100th South-West Thunder game.

The 90-game National Premier Leagues Queensland veteran vice-captain has been through the club's highs and the lows and while still in his early twenties, Fanning is one of the more senior members of the squad.

The midfielder is one of the most vocal on the field and in the changing rooms and no one underestimates his importance to the Thunder.

"Tom has almost played 100 games for us and this year we decided to go with (a vice captain) who has been here since day one," Thunder assistant coach Mick Turvey said.

"He is one of the elder-statesmen of the club."

The Thunder are struggling to get out of a slump of bad form that has seen them chalk up just one win so far this season.

In times like these Turvey said that players like Fanning are the ones you call on.

"Tom is so important his work-rate is outstanding because he gives 100 per cent and finishes harder in the 90th minute," he said.

"It has probably been the best he's ever played (this year) and he says that himself because he feels like he has really stepped up to the next level, especially being one of the leaders of the group."

Fanning has popped up with a goal at Suncorp Stadium against the Roar Youth and a slotted home a 90th minute winner against Western Pride this season, digging the Thunder out of holes time and time again.

The South-West Thunder women take on Western Pride tomorrow in Ipswich.
