Faith not lost in Millions hope despite first defeat

CONNECTIONS of beaten hot shot Wicked Intent have not lost confidence their previously unbeaten star can bounce back and win the $2 million Magic Million at the Gold Coast on January 10.

Sent out a raging hot $1.40 favourite after three runaway wins, Wicked Intent was run down in the last 50 metres by smart juvenile Mishani Honcho, who enjoyed a cosy run in transit before producing a brilliant late sprint in the BJ McLachlan Stakes on Saturday at the same track.

While the first defeat of his career prompted Sportsbet.com to ease his quote from $3.40 to $5, Wicket Intent still remains favourite for one of the richest two-year-old classics in the world.

Wicked Intent was given little peace in front by both Blink 'N' Miss and It's Vegas Baby at his first try and 1200m.

Jockey Chris Munce (pictured) also felt he raced on the worst part of the track which didn't help his cause.

There was also a line of thinking that the speedy gelding would be better suited sitting just off the speed and running on rather than setting it as he did at the weekend

While the winner Mishani Honcho is not eligible for the Magic Millions, he is being set for a big two-year-old race at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

With Wicked Intent's grip on the rich juvenile race significantly loosened, the main challenges to emerge from the weekend's racing were Saturday's strong-finishing Canterbury winner Perignon firming on to the second line of betting with Claudia Jean at $7.
