Facebook famine is tough test

IT IS a prospect that would have many a socially connected teen shaking in horror – no Facebook for 40 hours.

That prospect will become a reality for 16-year-old Ayla Nash, who will give up Facebook, talking and using her left hand for 40 hours this weekend to help kids and families who are suffering from chronic hunger.

Her self sacrifice will be done as part of World Vision initiative 40 Hour Famine, which encourages participants to spend 40 hours not doing or having something they believe they need or love so they can understand what it is like for kids who have to go without.

Ayla, who is constantly logged into the social networking site via her phone, admits she is going to find it hard going this weekend.

“My friends were going to do it with me, but refused to give up Facebook,” Ayla said.

“They said they couldn't go without it for that long.”

The Toogoolawah State High student said she was also unsure how she was going to stay mute for 40 hours or go without the use of one of her hands.

40 Hour Famine was started by World Vision Australia in 1975, for the purpose of raising money to help children, their families and communities in desperate need.

Funds raised help to support World Vision's work tackling the causes of poverty, through both short-term solutions and long-term development projects.

The challenge begins at 8pm on Friday and runs until noon Sunday.
