Retired Calliope cop relieved over cold case breakthrough

IT has been 23 years and five months since Jean Fisher walked into the Calliope Police Station and reported her 26-year-old grandson missing.

Former Calliope Police officer in charge Sergeant Darryl Saw said he can still remember that day on August 8, 1994.

The now retired Mr Saw, who spent 27 years with the Calliope Police, was involved in the early inquiries into the missing persons report before the case was handed over to Gladstone Criminal Investigation Branch.

Yesterday Mr Saw, now the Calliope RSL Sub-Branch secretary, said he was pleased the long-running investigation had led to the arrest of a 51-year-old Rosedale man.

"I'm pleased the investigation has eventually been fruitful, it will give some relief to the families involved and the police who have been involved in a very extensive investigation," he said.

The Calliope man who retired in 2001 is one of many police officers to handle parts of the investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of Robert Grayson and Derek Van Der Poel.

Russell Williams was yesterday charged with two counts of murder and drug production following a breakthrough in the cold case.

Detective inspector Capricorn District Darrin Shadlow said a 51-year-old Rosedale man has been charged in relation to a 1993 double murder.

When the investigation began, Detective Inspector of the Capricornia District Darrin Shadlow was part of the Rockhampton Police Criminal Investigation Branch.

"There's police who were involved in this investigation who are no longer in the job, we need to let them know their hard and good work has paid off in the end," he said.

Also retired is Rockhampton Police inspector Tony Wood who had a lead role in the initial investigation.
