"The driver attempted to make a right turn at the intersection with Tweed Valley Way," Insp Steel said.

She was conveyed to Tweed Hospital by ambulance in a serious condition, and has since been transferred to the Gold Coast University Hospital with a fractured pelvis and minor head injuries.

Insp Steel said her 61-year-old female passenger suffered chest injuries and was taken to Tweed Hospital in a stable condition.

A four-year-old child, secured in a capsule in the rear of the vehicle, was unharmed.

After several afternoons of heavy rain, Insp Steel urged drivers to take care.

"Always drive to the conditions, and to your ability," he said.
