Woman fined for owning scissors. Strange but true

A 52-YEAR-OLD woman has been fined $450 in Maryborough Magistrates Court for possessing a pair of scissors.

Leanne Maree Webber appeared in court and pleaded guilty to charges of possessing anything used in the commission of a crime and contravening a direction or requirement of police.

The court heard Webber had been found guilty of possessing cannabis about five months ago and since that time, Webber had ceased smoking the drug.

When police raided her home on April 5, they found no drugs but questioned her in regards to a pair of scissors in her home.

She told police she had previously used the scissors to chop cannabis but she "hadn't used them in a while".

The scissors were now used for gardening, the court was told.

Webber was charged with possessing the scissors and later missed an appointment to get her fingerprints taken, which resulted in the charge of contravening a requirement or direction of police.

The court heard Webber was separated from her partner and had three children and four grandchildren.

While she accepted the police version of events, it was stressed that it had been five months since the scissors had been used for an offence.
