UPDATE, 10.01am: THE Bowen man who rolled his four-wheel drive on the Bruce Highway near Merinda has multiple skull fractures and broken ribs, said a Queensland Police spokesman.

It follows a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman initially describing the man's injuries following the crash early Saturday morning as "not very serious".

Queensland Ambulance also said the man was airlifted to Townsville Hospital "due to intoxication levels", not his injuries.

The police spokesman said investigations were ongoing and officers were waiting for the 26-year-old's condition to improve before they spoke with him about the crash.

It was also noted police had not "taken blood off him" to test blood alcohol content (BAC) due to the extent of his injuries.

Townsville Hospital will be contacted for more information.

INITIAL: A BOWEN man has been airlifted to Townsville Hospital "due to intoxication levels" after he rolled his four-wheel drive on the Bruce Highway overnight, says Queensland Ambulance Service.

Queensland Police Service received a call at 12.20am to head to the crash about 2km north of Merinda in which a Toyota Landcruiser had rolled.

A police spokesman said the car was travelling around a gradual bend, went off the road and the driver corrected too sharply, rolling the car onto its roof.

A 26-year-old man was taken to Bowen Hospital with "not very serious injuries", an ambulance spokeswoman said, but he was later airlifted to Townsville Hospital for intoxication.

The police spokesman said about 9.15am that investigations into the incident were continuing, but the man "was not breath tested at the scene due to his injuries".

Merinda is about 10km west of Bowen.
