THERE were plenty of fur coats, colourful wigs, sparkly ribbons and tutus at yesterday’s Fruitopia Family Fair Day dog show.
And that was just the owners.
Beautiful sunshine greeted the crowds who turned up to put their dogs through their paces at the hay bale obstacle course.
Ms Sugar Cane announced each of the competitors while Dr Barby Galore and Rollin daHay helped reset the course as posts were knocked down and dogs and their owners sometimes lost their way.
Points were awarded for not only completing the course but also appearance.
“Looking pretty at the end of the course, that’s where all the points are,” Ms Sugar Cane said.
Vos of Byron Bay was there with her two large Dalmatians, Stripe and Square, wearing a matching spotted outfit.
“The dogs are very excited,” she said.
“This is our party day and they are very happy to be here.”
Last year’s dog champion – Minnie the cavoodle – had a lot of competition but owner Michael Rogowski of Lismore was confident she would perform well.
In matching outfits both Mr Rogowski and Minnie breezed through the obstacle course like old pros.
The dog show was only one of the events held in the grounds of the Lismore Showground.
The program also boasted a bake off and a So You Thank You Can Drag competition.
Tropical Fruits events co-ordinator Shane Duniam of North Lismore said the day was a fundraiser for theorganisation’s land fund.
“Our big plan is to get land some day so we can build a clubhouse and make a home for Tropical Fruits,” he said.
“Last year we got about 500 people visit and around 27 dogs in the show.
“We seem to already have twice that many this year.”
Many families also turned up to enjoy the day, including Jill Bannerman of Lismore and her three child- ren Josh, 12, Amelia, 7 and Jarryd, 5.
“I came down here as I’m the daughter of one of the organisers,” Ms Bannerman said.
Daughter Amelia was enjoying watching the dogs perform.
“It’s funny because they are all running around,” she said.
