A NEW resident is calling on council to let the public 'release their hounds'.

Sarah Alexander recently moved to the Gatton area and has noticed there is no enclosed area where dogs can be let off their leashes.

The first-year veterinary science student and dog lover has started a petition she is hoping the Lockyer Valley Regional Council will consider.

"Dogs really do need a place that they can run and play with other dogs that is safe," she said.

"I was really surprised when I moved to Gatton that there was not one here already."

Ms Alexander said in the year 2011/2012, the RSPCA took in 55,563 dogs - 26.5% of those unfortunately had to be euthanised, 59% of these because of behavioural reasons.

Having moved to Gatton from Toowoomba, she has been driving to the dog parks there on weekends to allow her two beagles to run while she studies.

"I find it therapeutic to study, but it could be for people who don't have time to walk their dogs or an elderly couple who can't walk their dog," she said.

"My beagles have definitely gotten more naughty and more shy around other dogs since I stopped being able to take them regularly."

She said while LVRC would have a better idea of where a dog park should go, an area near Lake Apex would be ideal.

Mayor Steve Jones said off-leash dog areas were an excellent idea.

"It gives them a place for the dogs that is safe and contained," he said.

"But we have to try and establish them in a place that suits the people with the dogs and suits the people who don't like the dogs.

"There is no more emotive issue that council deals with than dogs."
