Dodgy shopper rorting businesses with scam

LOCAL shopkeepers have been warned by police about a man who is claiming to be shortchanged in a scam involving $100 notes.

On each occasion the man has handed over a $100 note and received change for a small purchase.

It is alleged he has then hidden the $50 note given in the change and told the cashier he has been short changed.

The cashiers have then handed a further $50 to the man who has then left the store.

Coffs/Clarence Police said its important business owners and attendants double check customer cash transactions after a number of reported frauds over the last week.

The reported offences have occurred at Grafton, Tyndale and Urunga, however, it is likely that further offences have gone unreported.

If you suspect you have been a victim of a similar offence please report the matter to police.

The man is described as: caucasian, 40 years old, about 160cm tall with short brown hair possibly driving a maroon commodore.

"It is important businesses have cash handling procedures in place and follow them,"police said.

"Particular care should be taken when dealing with larger denomination notes."

Police are urging anyone with information about these incidents to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page by clicking here.
