Die-hard Muster fans arrive early

WAY back in 1982 when the Webb brothers first kicked off the Country Music Muster at their Widgee property, Corry O’Neill was in the thick of the action.

And she hasn’t missed a Muster since.

Corry, who hails from Norwell, is one of the early birds who set up camp weeks before the main event in August.

“I used to just go for a day and a night,” the veteran camper told The Gympie Times yesterday.

“Last year we came six weeks before the Muster and this year we’re here eight weeks early.”

It’s a passion for camping and the enduring friendships made at the music festival that draws Corry, her family and mates back each year.

“I love meeting new people and catching up with old friends,” she said, relaxing in the crisp morning air with red kelpie Zena beside their warm-as-toast campfire.

The Amamoor Creek State Forest Park looks particularly beautiful this year.

“This is the greenest it’s been for some time, apart from the really wet year – the Mudster. That year caused us to shift our camp up the hill to this spot. Our camp wasn’t that bad until the boys started to play mud football. Then it became all mud,” Corry recalled with a smile.

The National Country Music Muster is on August 24 to 29.
