Design being drawn for Cooroy to Curra highway work

DETAILED design is underway to shape the final plan for Section D on the Cooroy to Curra Bruce Hwy upgrade.

Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey visited Gympie on Thursday to announce the State Government would spend $403.8 million over the next four years, with the vast majority of that funding going to the upgrade.

Mr Bailey said he was pleased to see the progress on Section C, which is expected to be complete by mid-2018.

"It's great to see them getting on with it," Mr Bailey said.

Mr Bailey said GHD was awarded the contract to form the detailed design of Section D, which stretches from Woondum to Curra.

"This 26-kilometre section of the Bruce Highway will bypass Gympie, with the corridor running east of the town, close to the railway line until Old Maryborough Road," he said.

"Preliminary planning for the Section D project was finalised in early 2016.

"With this additional funding, we were able to go to market to find the most suitable design consultant."

The detailed design will cost $50 million, with $10 million to be paid by the State Government and $40 million by the Federal Government.

Mr Bailey said the design was scheduled to be complete by late 2017.

"This funding investment will provide a boost to the local economy as well as providing hundreds of jobs for the local region," he said.

A Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman said the Federal Government would contribute 80% of funding and the State Government 20% for most Cooroy to Curra projects.

The funding comes as part of the $20.2 billion Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program.
