Denyer admits he was drunk on Sunrise

I'm A Celeb contestant Grant Denyer has made a startling confession about his time on Sunrise.

Denyer was the weather presenter on the Channel 7 breakfast show between 2004-2006 and 2010-2013.

In a scene set to air on I'm A Celeb tonight, Denyer admitted to his camp mates that he was sometimes drunk while presenting the weather.

"I don't like my relationship with alcohol," the TV presenter said. "When I was doing Sunrise weather for years, the amount of times I was probably still drunk on air in the morning was too many."

The former Family Feud host said it was now apparent that he had, and still has, a drinking problem.

"I think I have only just realised that from coming in here (I'm A Celeb), I drink to lessen anxiety," he said. "I didn't really realise I had until I saw the pattern I had from the fear of coming into here and the anticipation of a new gig."

Denyer said concerns about whether he would fit in with the rest of the I'm A Celeb cast and if he would be successful in challenges drove him to drink at a fast pace in the weeks leading up to the show.

Reflecting on his drinking habits while in the jungle made him realise he had a big problem.

"I have been asking myself this question for, far out, five years? 'Do I have a problem?' And I think the answer is, 'I do!'"

The TV veteran hinted he would be giving up alcohol in the not too distant future, saying: "I think I need it gone from my life to be able to navigate life better than I have been."

Denyer's booze confession comes just months after he opened up about his addiction to painkilling drugs while recovering from a monster truck accident that left him with a broken back in 2008.

On the podcast It's All True which he hosts with his wife, Chezzi, the personality detailed some of his shocking behaviour while he was high on morphine and Endone.

"I remember waking up thinking there was a home invasion and I thought that Chezzi was being attacked, being raped in the apartment.

"I'm trying to find these guys who are attacking you and raping you. I'm like, 'Where are they? I know they're here! Where are they?'"

The couple said the strong medication Grant was prescribed during his recovery was "the worst part of the injury by far".

"We had so many drug psychosis episodes where Grant would kick me out of the house because he would say I was an impostor dressed up as Chezzi," Chezzi said. "He'd be like, 'I don't believe you. Get out of the house!'"

The couple recalled a shocking incident that took place when they were living in an apartment on Castlereagh St in the Sydney CBD.

"I remember one night I left the house in my undies to go and get some scotch," Grant said.

Chezzi added: "He said, 'I want some scotch, you f***ing b**ch.' I was like, 'I beg your pardon?' He said, 'listen, you f***ing b**ch, I am going to get some scotch. Where's my ginger ale?'

"He came out and said, 'Well if you're not going to get it for me, fine, f**k you,' and he grabbed the keys and walked straight out the door," Chezzi said.

Grant stressed it was the withdrawals talking and he would never normally speak to his wife like that.

"I just wasn't in a place where I could understand my own actions or behaviours," he said.

Chezzi spent three hours searching the streets for Grant before she decided to have a look in the fire escape of their apartment building.

"It broke my heart," she said. "I found him at the top of the fire escape laying face down in all this filth. There was even a human poo next to him (which wasn't Grant's)."
