Demons prepare for pre-season

THE recent events may have knocked much of the infrastructure out of the district, but the Lockyer Valley Demons AFL Club is looking forward to hosting the AFL Darling Downs Pre Season Cup.

The Demons home ground, the Gatton Showgrounds, was not affected in the flooding and has received no damage to the playing surface.

According to Demons President Tony Bowers, the ground is in good shape and will be ready to go when the AFL Darling Downs Pre-season Cup kicks off this Saturday.

Now in its eighth year, the AFL Darling Downs Pre-season Cup Carnival is an integral part of the AFL Darling Downs Competition, providing the first series of matches for all clubs in the AFL Darling Downs Senior League.

The competition, based on the AFL's NAB Cup Pre Season Competition is hosted over the course of a single day and takes the form of a round robin competition.

Teams play a shortened version of the game comprising two pools.

The winners of each pool then play off in the Grand Final to determine the AFL Darling Downs Pre-Season Champions.

With upwards of 225 participants at the event and a further 200 or more spectators throughout the competition, the AFL Darling Downs Pre-Season Cup Carnival is the first significant event on the AFL Darling Downs calendar each year.

It is anticipated that teams from Darling Downs regional areas including Goondiwindi, Dalby and Warwick as well as many of the Toowoomba AFL teams will contest the event, hoping to take home the perpetual trophy and $1000 cash prize for the winning team.

Mr Bowers said that while much of the club's equipment had been damaged in the January floods, there were no tragedies directly affecting the club.

“Our club is only 12 months old and hosting the AFL Darling Downs 2011 Pre-season Cup is one way of ensuring the club remains sustainable in the long term,” Mr Bowers said.

“It's a vote of confidence from the AFL Darling Downs Senior League to offer the club the opportunity to host the event and help us get back on our feet after the recent losses.”

The AFL Darling Downs Pre-Season Cup kicks off at 9am on March 5, at the Gatton Showgrounds with the Grand Final to be held as a twilight game under lights late in the day.
