YOUNG Melbourne midfielder Dom Barry has quit the club to return home to central Australia.
The 20-year-old grew up in Fregon near Alice Springs and moved to Victoria on a tennis scholarship at 14.
His football development progressed rapidly at St Patrick's College in Ballarat and he was picked up by the Demons in a mini-draft deal in 2012 that also saw the club secure highly-rated young forward Jesse Hogan and selection 20 in exchange for picks three and 14.
Barry (pictured) told his teammates at training yesterday that he needed to reconnect with his homeland and wanted to focus on indigenous culture and welfare programs.
He made his debut in round 15 last season against the Western Bulldogs, going on to play five senior games and averaging 7.6 disposals.
Melbourne will drop Barry from its list, but is keen to work with the AFL to ensure he can return to the club if he regains for his passion for the game.
