Lightning gives Warwick resident's pacemaker a workout

DEBBIE Guyer saw her own house struck by lightning yesterday as a wild storm hit Warwick at 2.30pm.

While there was minimal damage to the house, she is even more grateful for the the pacemaker put in two months ago to regulate her heart.

The storm brought hail as big as 20 cent pieces to the town and east to Clintonvale. There was significant damage to the Condavale Drive area west of Warwick where wind was the major problem.

There were more than 20 calls to the SES for help, many with broken windows.

Mrs Guyer said she found out yesterday her pacemaker worked.

"I got a shock from seeing the yellow and red light when the lightning struck and my heart raced," she said.

"It felt like the pacemaker settled me down again."

She lives in Finch St, Cinema Heights, and was in the hallway near the front door when she heard a crack and saw the red and yellow light from the lightning which burnt a metal pole.

"It was a bit frightening," Mrs Guyer said.

She hasn't anything to compare the lightning strike with but said it was a little like the flashes from a welder.

"There was a bit of damage to the palm tree at the front and the strike ripped up a few roots of the tree," Mrs Guyer said.

"I never want to see a lightning strike again; it was a bit too close for comfort."

Her main damage was to the metal pole, one panel of the fence and the broken branches.
