David Hicks to appeal US terrorism conviction

DAVID Hicks will appeal his US conviction for supporting terrorism on the grounds he felt forced to make admissions in exchange for his release from Guantanamo Bay.

The 37-year-old, who spent five years in detention before US authorities allowed his transfer to an Adelaide prison, told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday that for him to move on with his life, he needed to first right the wrongs of his past.

Hicks has launched appeal papers in the US Court of Military Commission Review.

He hopes the legal action will show "no crime was committed" and send a message to the Australian Government that it is wrong to allow it's citizens to go through what he did without intervening. He said his reason for fronting the media was to have reporters "on board to say it was wrong".
